Willow looked around the living room one last time and
knew that if she stayed here much longer she was just
going to start bawling. Or she would lose her nerve.
Either way, that wasn't what she wanted.
This was her place. Her first apartment. She and Buffy
had moved in right after college, and it had been
wonderful. But when opportunity came a'knocking,
Willow had opted to open the door. And now she had to
pray that this was the right choice.
"Hey, Will, you didn't get any of the glassware, did
you?" Buffy called from the kitchen. "I don't know how
I was going to let you go without anything to drink
from."
Earlier Willow had been annoyed by Buffy's mothering.
And now as she watched her best friend pack yet
another box for her to take along, she just wanted to
cry.
"You really don't have to do this, Buffy," she said,
surveying the nearly-empty room. "I think you have me
everything. I'd be amazed if you had anything left."
Buffy smiled as she taped up the last box. "Hey, I can
always loot and pillage my mom's house for more. You
won't be able to do that."
"I'm only going to be an hour away," Willow reminded
her. "Anything I don't have, I can buy."
"Yeah. And this job is supposed to pay really well,
right?" she asked.
"Nine dollars an hour. And I'll be trained for higher
positions." Willow nodded. "I'm going to be all
right."
"And your cousin's helping you find an apartment,
right?"
She looked at her patiently. "Buffy..."
"I know," Buffy said quickly. "I just... You're going
to be an hour away and I don't have a car!"
That was it, both of them were about to lose it. Tears
in both their eyes, the girls hugged. "I will be back
as much as I can," Willow promised. "I'm not going to
forget you guys are here."
"You better not," Buffy said. "Or I'll track you down
and remind you by kicking your ass."
"Please tell me that's it," Xander said, panting as he
came back into the apartment. "Fifth floor? Why did
you guys ever move onto the fifth floor?"
"To make your life difficult," said Buffy. She pulled
away from Willow to hand Xander the box of glasses.
"One last box."
"Where's Giles?" Willow wondered.
"Waiting by the car, refusing to come up anymore,"
Xander said. "I should have followed his lead, had
Miss Slayer here do the dirty work."
Buffy shook her head. "Can't you see I'm having a
bonding moment with Willow?"
Xander rolled his eyes, repositioning the box so he
could actually carry it. "I'll be by the car. Dying.
Slowly from the inside out, thank you very much."
Both girls smiled as they watched Xander leave again.
"I guess that's my cue to get down there," Willow
said, a bit reluctantly.
"Yeah," said Buffy. "Are you sure you have
everything?"
"Positive," Willow said. "You've done like twelve
sweep of every room to make sure I have everything I
could ever possibly need."
"Hey, I worry," she said, and smiled. "Okay, so
downstairs."
Willow nodded. "Downstairs."
She made it a point to get out of there as soon as
possible. If she hesitated, she would probably find
her feet permanently planted to the ground, refusing
to move. No, she couldn't do that to herself. She had
given up Yale and several job offers to stay in
Sunnydale. And she had to take this chance before the
chances stopped coming.
Buffy came with her downstairs to the parking lot, and
they met up with Giles and Xander. Both of them looked
exhausted. Hey, she had offered to help, but Giles had
insisted that they could do it. Hopefully they didn't
regret it. "You're all ready to go?" asked Giles.
"Totally," Willow said. "I'm all set."
There was a definite silence, a discomfort setting in
the air. How could she say goodbye to the people that
had been such a huge part of her life for so long? And
this was it. Not for forever, but... This was big.
"What time is your cousin expecting you?" Giles asked.
"I should be at Melissa's about four. No deadline,"
she said.
"Call when you get there," Xander told her.
She found herself rolling her eyes again at that. "No
problem, Dad," she said, playfully hitting him in the
arm. "Okay, well, I need to be going." There. She'd
said it.
"Bye, Will," Buffy said, and hugged her again. And
then she could feel Xander's arms around her, too. And
then Giles. And that was when she just started crying.
No, she didn't want to do this anymore. But she had
to. She had to be strong.
Slowly, after a long while, they all pulled apart, and
Willow quickly wiped tears from her eyes. "I'll call
as soon as I get there," she said.
"And we'll be down there as soon as possible," said
Xander. "We'll road trip it and make sure you're
okay."
"Knock 'em dead, Willow," Buffy smiled. "You'll do
great."
Willow's first urge was to hug them all again, but she
had to stop stalling. Wiping again at her eye, she
just said, "I love you guys," and started off to her
car. She looked back at them one more time before she
got in, and realized that it hadn't even been this
hard to say goodbye to her biological family.
Taking a deep breath, Willow got into her car and
started off.
