Random Comments:

"I thought it was very funny that Anya's bluntness and cluelessness were part of her personality as a human. I'd always assumed she'd forgotten how to feel human during her millenium as a vengeance demon. I like it when they twist stuff." -- Lorien

"Okay, did anyone else get bothered by the fact that no one mentioned that vengeance demons are only vulnerable if you take away their necklaces? Everybody learned that during the 'party that wouldn't end' ep (the viewers learned it during 'Doppelgangland'.) She should have known that she couldn't hurt Anya with a sword. I kept wondering when Buffy would try to go for the necklace and she never did. Also, destroying the necklace might have made Anya human again (or at least taken away her powers), thus making her one of the 'can't hurt anyone' demons that the Scoobies don't have to kill. I was thinking that Xander would destroy the necklace thereby preventing Buffy from killing the now human (or harmless) Anya. Would have been a nice, heroic, and smart thing for the PTB to have Xander do." --
Lorien

[re: "Becoming" ]
"I really liked how they brought this up. First, it shows Buffy hasn't forgotten what she had done, and she doesn't do the judge, jury, executioner thing without understanding the burden it carries. It also brings back the whole "kick his ass" comment that seemed to have just came and left. Perhaps a little conflict between Xander and Willow now that the truth is out?" -- Alan

[re: "Becoming" ]
"Yes, I thought it was well done of the PTB to do that scene. First he lays a guilt trip on her for not killing Angel soon enough and now he lays a guilt trip on her for jumping to kill Anya too soon. It's understandable, because he cares for Anya but I'm glad to see Buffy standing up for herself." -- Lorien

[re: Natalie: "And they never even touched the whole Hallie as Cecily thing!"]
"Kind of odd that they'd have that whole set up for the Cecily thing and then do nothing with it. Though something occurred to me earlier today: Hallie made a reference to having some sort of rivalry with Anya during the Crimean War, but that, if I recall correctly, was in the 1850's, or about the time Cecily would have been born. So how could Hallie be Cecily. Unless she was only pretending to be a human named Cecily." -- Scott

"An episode that had references to events in seasons two, four, five, and six. I'm getting the odd feeling that they're doing a sort of nostalgia trip in anticipation of wrapping up the series this year. Hmm." --
Scott

[re: Lorien: "Why do you call him Kube?"]
"I think it's in reference to a character on the old "Parker Louis Can't Lose" tv show. The guy playing Olaf played a guy called Kube. Anybody else notice how they put the old scratchy film look on the flashback scene?." -- Alan

[re: Natalie: "About all the women Xander's surely soon to be dating? I still think he's gonna end up with Buffy by the end of the season.]
"Don't think so.... I'm thinking Anya..." -- Hap

"Damn skippy he is!! :waves her lil B/X flag:: Its getting a might worn from all the waving over 7 years..." -- Laurie

"i agree with you here. also im so happy with this. a million b/a warriors /ba shippers sighed of relief (is there a million? i dont know..)...thats all we wanted--the characters to stay in character and remember. thats why the ad ran in the hollywood reporter. "i've loved angel more than ill ever love anybody" i need to put that on my splash page of my website tonite. i was so happy. also the becoming refernece--ths is SO Btvs's last season--joss is finally answering/touching on subjects fans have been talking/griping about..nat that convo was dall over the web about xanders lie--not just this board. and willow was so cute--'wait i didnt say that'...they handled it perfectly. im loving btvs this season...and spike as crazy? hey it works for me. i dont think relationships will play a huge part this seaosn on btvs though...call me crazy but i think theyll keep willow, xander and buffy single--like season 1. the show seems creppier and more 'back to basics' like the first seaosn so far to me and that means less 90210-ish. I think theres more drama in yeah willow loved tara and she died (love and loss cos of death), xander loved anya but wasnt ready (love and loss cos of fear of future) and buffy doesnt let herself love since angel, or let anyone in like that because shes the slayer..ayway i have a whole theory on buffy and her loves but not enough room here--and yes shes still my favorite character. now all we need is for buffy to remember the forgotten day. oh and dork angel to die or something and let the real angel come back. [re: Natalie: "From beneath you it devours. Yeah, yeah, we get it. Just put it on the front page of the Sunnydale Times. "Our top story today: From beneath you, it devours. Buffy Summers, this means YOU!"]
"I'm not so sure that it means Buffy... That would be too easy of an answer for it.. ya know?" -- Hap

"the bunnies in the beginning..i was waiting for someting to explain why anya hated them. wa sit beacuse olaf made fun of her for wanting to give them away? i was waiting for something to happen with the bunnies so id go--aaaaahhhhhh....
and the cecily/hallie thingie...is it possible william the bloody thought a girl was beneath him and didnt ntoice her so celile/hallie was really a vengeance demon at work? crushing him...? maybe he was too wrapped up in himself and someone wished him to love someone who didnt acknowledge his existence (ok not bloody but crushing i the emotions department)." --
Sandy

[re: Sandy: "in the wish--anya had a necklace that gave her the powers..did everyone forget about the necklace? giles crushed it...anya wanted willow to help her get it back so she could get her powers back..instead they brought evil willow back..anyone else remember this (duh of course you do) so why no necklace?"]
"She had one. I don't know why Buffy didn't just break it or whatever. Last nights ep was the first time you could really notice it. Hallie's was always pretty visible. Anya was wearing some ugly stuff this season, but last night I think they made a point of showing it in some of the scenes. Who knows why Buffy didn't break the necklace. Maybe she didn't know for sure? Anya told her about Hallies but then never actually got a hold of Hallies necklace, and they don't know about Giles in the alta-verse. Gods, I don't know. :) ?" -- Kris

Alex's Review:

You know Joss is good at manipulating people's emotions when he can get even me to feel a little sympathy for Anya. Not that I wasn't completely enjoying seeing Buffy almost kill her.

Best parts were the Anya flashbacks, though I have a historical bone to pick- "Bar Matron" is much too PC for medieval Sweden. "Bar Wench" would probably have been used. Would it have been so horrible to use the latter?

Even though Xander's been for the most part Mature Guy this season, as soon as the women in his life become an issue again, he's back to being insensitive, accusation-throwing Xander. In other words he's turning into your typical 20-something male, i.e., me. [EG]

If Nat's right and we are heading to a Buffy/Xander rel, odds are that Xander's lie will come out and at the worst possible moment, because we know how Joss hates a happy, healthy relationship. If not I suspect we won't hear about it again. (and I still think W/X is more likely.)

Little Willow's Review:

I liked 90% of Selfless. I did not like the song being interjected _at that point_. It felt awkward being in the middle of the fight scene, there were things incorrect with the scene and with the lyrics. I would have preferred it either in earlier in that episode or an episode last year, or to have had those three minutes used for more character development, especially for Anya.

This episode had the potential to be another Revelations, Bad Girls or 5x5 for me, and it nearly got there, then went BOOM! fall *poof* in the last act.

Other than that, in a nutshell, I liked the subtitles and the Aud background information, I adored Willow looking like Willow, I liked Spike insane in the basement, I think Emma rocks, and I loved The Lie finally being said.

A full episode analysis / write up will appear when my VCR decides to love me again.

Natalie's Review:

Good ep...

Kube! This ep gives us Kube!

Okay, I am loving Dawn's hair and wardrobe for her one scene this ep.

About all the women Xander's surely soon to be dating? I still think he's gonna end up with Buffy by the end of the season.

Ooh, dead guy #1 was kinda cute. And other crass comments about the whole frat boy massacre? How the hell do you get blood out of pool table felt? And I like Anya's shirt better without the blood.

Look, it's OldeTymeAnya! And Kube! Speaking Swedish.

Okay, please. Can we get Spike out of the whatment sometime soon? I just want them to do more with him besides make him see dead people. (Though that Buffy trick was neat.) I keep comparing him to Crazy Dru, and now Spike's even making the comparisons.

Look! Willow's dressed kinda like first season Buffy, only with her first season uniform colored tights that I always hated!

Poor Willow. Always discovering the dead bodies.

The spider was creepy. Didn't really look like a spider (I though more like a mini Praying Mantis Lady only with a smaller head and eight legs), but it was creepy.

"That troll is doing an Olaf impression!" Hee.

Look, it's D'Hoffryn. I like D'Hoffryn. He has a fun name.

Love Buffy balancing the pencil cup on her forehead. Good to know someone else does stuff like that. (Never a pencil cup. Various mugs, yes.)

Hallie's in this ep. Yay. =)

"Get out." Damn. Willow can be really scary when she wants to be.

I never knew what the word "flay" meant till Buffy. I never had a reason to...

Xander. You don't touch the sticky black spider stuff. Because then you're just begging to be a character in a movie they play on the Scifi Channel on Saturday nights. (I'm still pissed I missed Route 666 with Lou Diamond Phillips. That looked to be good snark material.)

What's with the font to Anya's flashbacks? Every time before they were like the credits and logo. Do we just not care this ep?

"I killed Angel." THANK YOU! I was getting unbelievably pissed at Xander this scene. Yelling at Buffy about having to go after Anya, when he pushed and pushed for her to get rid of Angel. I'll quote back to the Angel ep for proof: "Angel's a vampire. You're the slayer. I think it's obvious what you have to do here." And he keeps up with that, ad nauseum. This is all really fitting, seeing as how FX played Becoming last night and this morning. Then you have the whole "Do you remember giving me Willow's message? 'Kick his ass?'" Willow didn't know! And while I'm so glad that they did something about that, I also cringe because I remember all the "Xander's lie" posts around the time of Becoming and how long it took that thread to die pretty much throughout the fandom and here it comes again...

I am really longwinded. Huh.

When Willow's pouring the sand on the bathroom floor, I'm going, "That's going to be hell to get out of the grout." I must be getting old.

Hee. Someone has a sketch of skinless Warren.

Smart Anya. Back to the scene of the crime. Hey. There are no cops and yellow tape. So no one's noticed the murder of 12 frat boys? I get that the girl in the closet might be freaked and curled up crying in a corner somewhere, and I know why Willow wouldn't tell, but what about everyone else? Frat boys? No one noticed they were gone?

Buffy's got swords again. How I loved Becoming... I finally manage not to cry at it.

Look, David and Marti are singing again. A duet!

I am so glad Anya's not blond anymore. The lighter and lighter it went... Definitely better as a brunette. As for the song: "Anya Christina Emanuella Jenkins Harris." I keep thinking of Animaniacs and Princess Angelina Contessa Louisa Francesca Banana Fana Fo Fesca III."

Best line of the episode: "Plus see above re: sweaty part."

Okay, Miss Buffy "I'm just getting started". Did you think to bring more weapons, maybe?

I love D'Hoffryn. We have a fun name, plus Lady Hacks Away and the slaughtering of the Abercrombie & Fitch catalog.

I need to state that Anya looks really pretty this ep, when she's not covered in blood.

[shriek] No! Not Hallie! Okay, while I love that they didn't go the cheesy death route with the whole sacrifice thing (It's much more surprising and fun when they go somewhere random that you don't expect), it's Hallie! And they never even touched the whole Hallie as Cecily thing!

From beneath you it devours. Yeah, yeah, we get it. Just put it on the front page of the Sunnydale Times. "Our top story today: From beneath you, it devours. Buffy Summers, this means YOU!"

So there.
